According to Sheikh Basel, the inauguration of the new health project would be a “quantum” leap in the field of health service and patient care. He also noted that the opening of the hospital extension will be in October coinciding with the inauguration of the emergency hospital in the Sabah Al-Ahmad area.

Speaking at the opening of the Cardiac Catheterization ward at the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, the minister shared that the new facility consists of three operation and catheterization wards, which include a room where surgeries are conducted, another for cardiovascular physiology, and the last one for cardiac catheterization.

The minister further shared that the percentage of urgent catheterization cases has gone up to 60 per cent in 2016 from only 7 per cent in 2012 in the country.

The new ward at the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital will help reduce the burden on Chest Diseases Hospitals (CDHs) at present, with more catheterization rooms will be opened soon at the Al-Farwaneya Hospital in the near future according to Sheikh Basel.

Head of Cardiology Division at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital Dr Mohammad Zubaid explained that the hospital receives around 850 patients with cases of heart strokes on a yearly basis, and these cases were later on distributed to three cardiac centres in various parts of the country to follow up with their treatment program, and to also perform cardiac catheterization procedures, as needed.

The inauguration of the new catheterization ward in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital coincides with the preparations conducted by the United Nations General Assembly for the third high-level meeting on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which will be held on September 27 in New York.

The ward opening will also run alongside with the celebrations of the World Heart Day, which will be on September 29, according to Dr Zubaid.
