Remains of Late OFW Repatriated, Family Receives PHP 1M & College Scholarships

The remains of the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Palawan who died in Kuwait was finally brought home to their family and relatives, who mourned for her sudden passing.

The father of 26-year old OFW Kamish Nacasi, Percival Nacasi, does not believe that his daughter would have committed suicide in Kuwait, where she worked for two years. Kamish flew to the Gulf state back in December 2016, where she worked as a baby sitter. However, her contract expired in 2018, but her employer requested her to extend while waiting for her replacement.

Family of Deceased OFW Granted PHP 1M Financial Assistance, College Support

Unfortunately, she could no longer return home to be with her family, following an alleged suicide case.

Together with her relatives, representative from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) as well as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Provincial PESO Manager G. Richard Rebote and MIDOL Employment Agency received the remains of the Filipina last August 7 (Wednesday), as shared in a report by Palawan Daily News.

From the airport, Nacasi’s remains were sent to St. Peter Memorial Funeral where she will be prepared for her wake and where an autopsy will be conducted as per the request of her family.

As per PESO Manager Rebote, the local government of Palawan coordinated with the family of the OFW for the fast repatriation of Nacasi’s remains. Together with the father of the OFW, they went to Manila to personally ask the help of President Rodrigo Duterte.

For his part, President Duterte asked the help of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III to facilitate the fast repatriation of the OFW’s remains. He also ordered the release of the necessary benefits and financial help for the bereaved family, which included financial help amounting to PHP 1 million. Furthermore, the children of the victim will receive a scholarship grant from OWWA and PHP 100,000 financial help. They will also receive PHP 20,000 burial benefit for Ms. Nacasi.

Of note, a PHP 5,000 monthly allowance will be given to the children of the deceased OFW by MIDOL Employment Agency.

Despite all the support and assistance rendered to our deceased kabayan, there is nothing more precious than the life that was taken away from her family too soon.  On a positive note, it is good to recognize how much our government is willing to extend support to the bereaved family of the OFW. However, there is much more to do in order to establish a safe space for migrant workers in Kuwait and to prevent deaths of this nature in the future.
