OFWs Injured Abroad Can Claim Up to PHP 100,000 From OWWA

An overseas Filipino worker who becomes disabled because of an accident abroad may claim cash assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), with payments reaching P100,000 for total or permanent disability. Partial disability claims can range from P2,500 to P25,000.

The benefit is meant to help OFWs cope with the sudden cost of an injury, medical treatment, or loss of income after an accident overseas. But it is not automatic. The worker must be an active OWWA member, and the disability must be accident-related.

OWWA lists the Disability Benefit under its Death and Disability Benefit Program on its official website. The agency describes it as assistance for OFWs with accident-related disabilities, with partial disability payouts from P2,500 to P25,000 and total or permanent disability payouts from P50,000 to P100,000. The benefit is available to land-based and sea-based OFWs, regardless of where they work. But many workers only learn about it after the accident—when documents are harder to secure and time is already critical.

Who Can Claim

The assistance is not open to every Filipino abroad. OWWA requires the claimant to be an active member at the time of the accident.

  • The disability must be accident-related.
  • The OFW must have been an active OWWA member when the accident happened.
  • The worker should have a valid Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) or exemption number.
  • The injury or disability must have occurred during the contract period, based on the reference information provided.
  • A family member or authorized representative may file the claim if the OFW cannot do it personally, subject to OWWA’s requirements.

How Much Can OFWs Get

The amount depends on the extent of the disability.

  • Partial disability: P2,500 to P25,000
  • Total or permanent disability: P50,000 to P100,000

OWWA evaluates the medical records and the nature of the injury before releasing the assistance. The benefit will not replace a worker’s full salary, but it can help cover urgent expenses while the OFW recovers.

Documents OFWs Should Secure

Workers injured abroad should ask for medical and accident records before leaving the hospital or the jobsite. These documents are central to the claim.

  • OFW Membership Record from OWWA
  • Passport or Seaman’s Identification Record Book
  • One 1×1 ID photo
  • Foreign medical certificate from a legitimate medical facility, translated into English
  • Philippine medical certificate from the attending physician
  • Accident report; seafarers may need an Accident Report or Master’s Report
  • Authorization letter, the OFW’s valid ID, and the claimant’s valid IDs if a representative files the claim

Where To File

Claims are processed at OWWA Regional Welfare Offices through the Program Services Division’s Social Benefits Unit. OWWA’s Citizen’s Charter lists the availment schedule as Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Go to the OWWA office covering the OFW’s permanent address in the Philippines.
  • Submit the complete documents.
  • Wait for OWWA to evaluate the claim and the disability.
  • Once approved, the assistance is released through check or cash payout.

Where To Get Help

OFWs and their families can call OWWA’s 24/7 hotline at 1348 or email owwacares@owwa.gov.ph for questions on eligibility and requirements.

For OFWs abroad, make sure to keep membership records, employment papers, and medical documents organized. An accident can happen without warning, but a missing document should not be the reason a valid claim is delayed.
